Holly Rolfe Leaves Their Worst Enemy Behind
Mustard had the pleasure of speaking again with Holly Rolfe who recently released "Worst Enemy" which reflects on the push and pull of what is wrong and right.
Mustard had the pleasure of speaking with Holly Rolfe in January. Before diving into our latest conversation check out our previous conversation here:
Humans are complex beings.
Being a human, Mustard has observed, is daunting. Every day they are tasked with responsibilites and tasks. These tasks can range anywhere from tedious (such as doing taxes) to life-changing (ending a serious relationship.) Each of these situations can sometimes have a grey area causing confusion on how to proceed. Determining what is right and what is wrong is one of the most difficult things to do. What makes this task even more difficult is when a human has to figure out what is best for themselves.
Holly Rolfe, from the West Midlands United Kingdom, has come to this point. On their newest release Worst Enemy they reflect on what is best for them. Getting to this decision often has many obstacles ahead of it. Questions race through your head such as: am I being selfish? what if this isnโt the right choice? is this really what is best for me? These questions can lead to self-doubt and heigthen any insecurity you may be feeling. Rolfe though does not allow themselves to be weighed down by those questions.
Tattooed on Holly Rolfeโs arm is a small cloud. This cloud reminds Holly to keep dreaming and reaching for their goals. It also acts as a reminder to stay positive when presented with challenges that you may be faced with. Rolfe is a rising star who recently switched their studies from musical theatre to pop music. Music is more than just a hobby for Rolfe. Music, as you hear through their songs, is something they are deeply passionate about.
In our latest conversation you have an opportunity to learn more about Holly Rolfe. We talk about being surrounded by music, their influences, and so much more!
1. Mustard is grateful and appreciative to have you join them again at Music Shelf. How are you doing today?ย
I am great, how are you?ย
2. Your Instagram biography features a cloud emoji. What do clouds symbolize and mean to you? Do you enjoy cloud gazing?ย
Haha, well I actually have a cloud tattoo on my arm. It represents to keep on dreaming, reaching for my goals and staying positive.ย
3. Would you recommend everyone take a day trip to Dublin?ย
100000%, I loved it! Definitely an incredible live music scene. ย
4. You have been surrounded by music your whole life. If you could create a mixtape or playlist with some of your favorite childhood songs, what would be on it?ย
My all time favourites are:ย
Hold The Line - Toto
Angels - Robbie Williamsย
Let Me Entertain You - Robbie Williamsย
Any Abba!
Any Adele!
5. When it comes to songwriting you like to create an image or storyline. How soon after creating this image or storyline do you begin improvising and crafting a song?
I do it all in the same session, keeps the ideas flowing quickly!
6. Mimi Webb, Belleh Mae, and Lexi Jayde are some of your influences. What song from each do you consider essential listening?ย
Red Flags by Mimi Webb
On Purpose - Belleh Mae
Cruel Intentions - Lexi Jaydeย
7. You are currently studying musical theatre. Would you say you incorporate elements of the theatre into your live performances? Have you been in any productions at Leeds Conservatoire?ย
I have actually changed courses for my final year to Pop Music, but yes I have been. I used some of my acting training with my previous music video. I have recently been in the staged concert of 9 To 5 which was just fantastic, a great way to finish my MT training!
9. Speaking of performances you will be taking part in the first ever Centenary Square Summer Series in August. How are you preparing for your first ever festival?ย
Unfortunatelyย that has been cancelledย but my band and I are still preparing for lots of festivals and hope to perform live very soon!ย
10. Mustard wonders what it was like to have physical copies of your EP "Lost in The Dark" sold at HMV? Can humans still obtain a physical copy of your debut EP from this retailer?
It has just been so surreal, they have now finished their contract at HMV but I still have a few copies left for people to purchase through me!
11. When we spoke last you shared that you love going to the gym. What are some of Holly Rolfe's favorite gym exercises?ย
I love running, I think it is just so much fun and I really enjoy swimming too so they're my current things!ย
12. Mustard would like to wish you congratulations on your newest single "Worst Enemy." Could you share more about your newest release?ย
Thank you! It has come round so quickly, this song feels quite mature to me. I feel as if it definitelyย shows some artist development from my previous release. I have really enjoyed the whole process of it!ย
13. How does someone become Holly Rolfe's worst enemy?ย
Haha, what a great question! Worst Enemy is used in a different sense in my song, to me it represents something that is meant to stay in the past because it is no longer good for you, represented by not just a person but memories.ย
14. This single highlights how difficult it can be to move on from a human. Would you say music helps you with a difficult process like this?ย
1000%, I don't know what I'd do withoutย it!
15. As a condiment Mustard wonders how you can tell when something feels wrong? What advice would you give to a human who may be in a similar situation?ย
I think you can tell in your gut when something is wrong, if you are in a similar situation I think it is helpful to use the question - what would my future self be telling me to do? Then that's your answer!ย
16. What is on the horizon for Holly Rolfe?ย
More music, VERY soon!
17. Can readers still find your music on all streaming platforms?
Of course!ย
